Instructional Focus
At awâsis waciston our instructional focus is building and improving students’ literacy and numeracy
skills. Students will demonstrate growth in reading and writing with an instructional emphasis on
Foundational Literacy. Through the use of manipulatives and a variety of pedagogical approaches,
students will show growth in math skills as they proceed through the simple to the complex and the
concrete to the abstract.
Assessment for Learning strategies enable teachers to measure student growth through daily
conversations, observations, performance-based school assessments, and large-scale
assessments. These may include HLATs (Highest Level of Achievement Test), SLAs (Student
Learning Assessment, CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test) and PATs (Provincial Achievement Tests).
